Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
-
You configure the computer to start from an iSCSI disk.
-
The computer supports PCI Express Serial Number Capability.
-
You replace the iSCSI network adapter or the motherboard on the computer by using an identical device. For example, you replace the device because of a hardware failure.
-
You log on to the computer and then restart the computer.
In this scenario, you can restart the computer successfully the first time. However, when you try to restart the computer again, you receive the following Stop error message:
STOP 0x0000007B (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Notes
-
The four parameters in this Stop error message may vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
-
Not all "0x0000007B" Stop error messages are caused by this problem.
Note:Â After applying this hotfix, even when you replace the device with the PCI Express device holding a different serial number, the device instance path would not be modified as long as the same device model is connected to the same slot. In this case, the same device instance path, which is stored in the registry, would continue to be used. Thus, the re-installation of the device does not occur.When you apply this hotfix, length of the serial number in device instance path would be changed from 32 bit to 64 bit. Thus, the device instance path of existing PCI Express devices would be modified and this causes device re-installation of those devices..Note that if the failed iSCSI network adapter is a built-in device, and you choose to use a different built-in adapter for iSCSI boot, that installing this hotfix will not resolve the issue, because the adapter would not be in the same PCI-Express location. You would need to manually unbind the Light Weight Filter (LWF) from the second network adapter. See the following KBs for more details: KB2507616, KB976042
Cause
This problem occurs because Windows recognizes the network adapter or the motherboard as a new device. This occurs because the serial number of the network adapter or of the motherboard differs from the serial number of the previous network adapter or motherboard.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxx version number.

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important for maintaining the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
