How does "Hey Copilot" work?

Starting a voice chat by saying "Hey Copilot" is turned off by default. You need to turn on the Listen for "Hey Copilot" setting in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

  1. Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on your Windows desktop and sign in with your Microsoft 365 work or school account.

  2. At the bottom of the left-side menu, select ... Settings and more.

  3. In the  Settings icon Settings window, select  Outline of computer window for Quick View settings in Copilot app Quick View from the left-side menu.

  4. In Quick View settings, turn on the Listen for “Hey Copilot” toggle.

Once you've turned on this setting, you can say "Hey Copilot" to start a new voice chat with Copilot on Windows devices, which also opens the voice chat controls.

Note: Language and accent variations may cause accidental activation of a voice chat.

How do I end a voice chat?

To mute or end a voice chat, select  Unmute microphone button Mute or  Icon used on the close button in Journal Dismiss on the voice chat controls. At that point, Copilot stops listening.

If you haven't spoken to Copilot in 30 seconds, Copilot notifies you that the conversation will end in 30 seconds of continued inactivity. After one minute of inactivity, the voice chat ends automatically.

Note: Voice chats in Copilot may pick up background noise, which can keep the voice chat active even though you aren’t speaking.

What can "Hey Copilot" do?

Conversations with Copilot are designed to be interactive. You can interrupt, redirect, or end the chat at any time by speaking, muting, or dismissing the session.

  • Prepare and manage your day: Get calendar summaries, triage your inbox, draft replies, and ask for meeting details using voice commands.

  • Brainstorm and create: Share ideas with Copilot, which will ask clarifying questions and help structure your thoughts.

  • Search and explain: Ask Copilot to search the web or your work, explain concepts, translate, or clarify information while multitasking.

What are the limitations of "Hey Copilot?"

  • Voice chat wake word using “Hey Copilot” is only available in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows desktop.
