Symptoms

When you send an email message to a distribution group or to multiple mailboxes in Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 or Exchange Server 2016, the Messaging Records Management (MRM) properties are incorrectly stamped.

Cause

This issue occurs when a user in the recipient list is delivered to first on the database. The user properly stamps the item because of the inbox policy tag, and then the value will be kept on the next recipient being delivered as the following properties on the StoreDriverDeliveryEventArgsImpl class for each delivery aren't reset:

  • RetentionPolicyTag

  • RetentionPeriod

  • RetentionFlags

This issue happens when a user has a mailbox rule to move an item to outside of the Inbox, and it shouldn't have a retention policy tag applied to the item.

Resolution

To fix this issue, install one of the following updates:

For Exchange Server 2019, install the Cumulative Update 9 for Exchange Server 2019 or a later cumulative update for Exchange Server 2019.

For Exchange Server 2016, install the Cumulative Update 20 for Exchange Server 2016 or a later cumulative update for Exchange Server 2016.
