Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install a Database Engine instance of Microsoft SQL Server code-named 'Denali' Community Technology Preview 1 (CTP1) on a computer.

  • You register the Database Engine instance by using SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio (SSMS 2008 R2) on the same computer or on another computer.

  • You double-click the instance in the Registered Servers pane to connect the instance, and then the connection is established successfully.

In this scenario, you receive the following SQL Server Management Objects (SMO) error message:

Index was outside the bounds of the array. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in SSMS 2008 R2.

Resolution

NoteTo resolve this issue, apply Cumulative Update 5 for SQL Server 2008 R2 on the computer that has SSMS 2008 R2 installed.
