Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.
Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a high-performance computer that has many processors. For example, the computer has 32 physical CPUs and 512 gigabytes (GB) of RAM.
-
The computer is running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.
-
An application that is running on the server executes queries that create many worktables in the tempdb database.
In this scenario, you may receive an error message that resembles the following in the SQL Server error log:
Additionally, the USERSTORE_SCHEMAMGR SQL Server cache has many entries and grows quickly.
Cause
This issue occurs when many worktables are marked for deferred drop. When many worktables are marked for deferred drop, the clean-up process may take a very long time to finish.

Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
More Information
Worktables are internal tables that are created in the tempdb database and are not visible to users. SQL Server uses worktables for the following operations and objects:
-
Cursors
-
LOB variables (for example, Varchar(max))
-
Merge Joins
-
Parallel queries
-
Spool operators
-
XML document usage
-
Service Broker
-
Database consistency checks
SQL Server tries to drop the worktable when the specific work is completed. If the try fails, then the worktable is marked for cleanup (deferred drop). The background task that is responsible for Ghost record cleanup performs the cleanup of the deferred drop worktables.
When worktables are created frequently, the background task can take a long time to clean up the deferred drop worktables, and there may be many worktables in the cache. This cumulative update uses a more efficient algorithm to clean up the deferred drop worktables. Therefore, the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section does not occur.References
