Applies ToSQL Server 2012 Analysis Services

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a web application that uses claims-based authentication in Microsoft SharePoint 2013.

  • You have a Microsoft Excel workbook that uses a BI semantic model connection (.bism) file to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) instance that is running in Tabular mode. The .bism file was created inside the SharePoint farm, and the SSAS instance is running outside the farm.

  • You publish the workbook on a SharePoint site, and then you open the workbook by using the web application.

In this scenario, you cannot update the data in the workbook. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

External Data Refresh FailedAn error occurred during an attempt to establish a connection to the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh: PowerPivot Linked Data.
