The building of a spatial index or queries by using the index grid or tessellation operators may not execute as quickly as expected.
The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.

This fix reduces the memory allocation rates that are associated with the spatial grid and tessellation operations. SQL Server spatial performance was improved in SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU7. This fix includes additional improvements for specific spatial operations, most notably index creation and select activities involving the index grid and tessellation activities. Use the query plan to identify use of the spatial index and tessellation activities.
The most frequently affects objects are Points and Polygons when they are combined with activities such as STDistance and STContains.
