Symptoms

Assume that you have an earlier version of Microsoft SQL Server installed such as an instance of SQL Server 2012. When you try to upgrade this instance of SQL Server to Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1 by using a slipstream installation, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

This update package could not be opened. Verify that the update package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer update package.


Resolution

This problem was first fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Cumulative Update 6 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. Check out the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:

Workaround

To work around this issue, run the upgrade installation again.
