Symptoms

Assume that you run an ALTER INDEX rebuild command that has the RESUMABLE=ON option in Microsoft SQL Server. If this is a filtered index that includes a condition such as column IS NULL, the operation may fail and return an assertion error. Additionally, a crash dump file may be generated.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server:

Note: Depending on index structure and filtered index condition, the SQL Server version cannot safely complete resumable index build. After the CU is installed, instead of generating an assertion and dump, the SQL Server gracefully terminates the operation and returns a new error code 10675.

"Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor could not produce a query plan. The RESUMABLE option is not supported for this index build. Remove the RESUMABLE option and rerun the statement."
