AI generated Lesson Plans can be created in a guided interface, leveraging international standards for grounding and AI suggestions to create grounded lesson plans for an educator.

Note: This feature does not describe creating lesson plans using Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat or Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word. This feature is currently available in Teach in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app and Classwork in Teams for Education.

Note: This feature is only available to Faculty/Staff with a Microsoft 365 for Education license. If you do not see it, please check with your IT administrator.

Create a lesson plan

  1. Open Classwork In your class team, go to the Classwork tab, and on a module select the + sign to add to your module.

  2. Select Create with Copilot At the top right, select Create with Copilot to view content types.

  3. Choose Lesson plan From the list, select Lesson plan to begin.

  4. Enter class info Complete the required fields:

    • Subject (e.g., LA)

    • Grade level (e.g., Grade 8)

    • Language (e.g., English - United States)

  5. Write a clear description Enter at least 20 characters describing what students will learn. Tip: Specific objectives improve the quality of Copilot-generated outlines. Example: “Students will analyze how authors use dialogue and description to develop characters and plot in fiction.”

  6. Add content (Optional)  Select Add content to upload or link materials from OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams. Supported file types: Word (.docx), PDF, and text (.txt).

  7. Align to standards (Optional) Choose Add standards to connect the lesson to academic frameworks. Learn about supported standards

  8. Set lesson duration Enter the expected lesson time (e.g., “45 minutes”).

  9. Generate outline Select Generate outline to have Copilot create your draft lesson.

Review and edit your lesson outline

Copilot generates a structured lesson plan that includes:

  • Overview: Subject, grade, and duration

  • Standards: Linked standards

  • Objectives: Key student learning goals

  • Materials: Suggested teaching resources

  • Lesson sections: Timed instructional activities

You can edit any section manually or use Enhance with AI to improve the outline with suggestions like:

  • Use role-play to act out student-written dialogues

  • Integrate digital storytelling tools

  • Offer rubrics for clear, targeted scene feedback

Set the tone and length of your lesson

Use these settings in the Enhance with AI panel to personalize your outline:

Tone options:

  • Instructional: Formal and academic (default)

  • Interactive: Encourages discussion and participation

  • Creative: Inspires imaginative or open-ended thinking

  • Inclusive: Emphasizes accessibility and equity

Length options:

  • Concise: Short and focused bullet points

  • Default: Balanced for typical classroom use

  • Expanded: More detailed guidance, ideal for new teachers or sub plans

Adjust tone and length, then select Regenerate lesson plan to apply changes.

Add to module

When your lesson is ready:

  1. Select Add to module at the top right.

  2. Choose an existing module or create a new one.

  3. Your lesson is now part of Classwork and ready to assign or reuse.
