Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a server that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack (SP1).

  • You run a third-party software package on the server.

  • The software package is a multithreaded Winsock server application.

In this scenario, the server stops responding intermittently, and the system shows a high nonpaged pool utilization from pool tag AfdP.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a nonpaged pool leak in the afd.sys driver. This leak exhausts the nonpaged pool and causes the server to stop responding. The problem can occur if one application thread posts a Winsock Select function on a set of sockets while a second application thread is deleting one or more of the sockets.
