Symptoms

When you perform a system state backup operation on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the system state backup operation fails, and you receive the following error message:

Enumeration of the files failed. The parameter is incorrect.

Additionally, the following event is logged in the event log on the computer:This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • There is a registry key under the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<service name>Note The <service name> placeholder is used for the name of the service name.

  • The value of the imagepath registry entry that is located at this subkey points to a volume that does not exist locally.

For example, assume that you perform a system state backup operation on a passive node. Additionally, assume that the imagepath registry entry of one service that is located on the passive node points to a volume that does not exist on the passive node. In this scenario, the system state backup operation fails, and you receive the error message.

Registry information

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

322756 How to back up and restore the registry in WindowsTo use one of the hotfixes in this package, you must create a registry key. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start start button , type regedit in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.

UAC If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, provide confirmation.

  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SystemWriterNote If this registry subkey does not exist, please create it manually.

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.

  4. Type ExcludedBinaryPaths, and then press ENTER. Note

  5. Right-click ExcludedBinaryPaths, and then click Modify.

They should not include environment variables (such as %windir%) and should not be enclosed in double or single quotation marks. Be sure to also include the full binary name with the path to be excluded, for example:

    D:\ProgramFolder\bin\program.exe

  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Note

  • If you use this method to exclude the service data from the system state backup scope, you have to back up the service data on the shared volume manually.

  • If you assign a drive letter to a shared volume that is excluded from the system state backup scope, you have to manually re-enter all the registry keys again by using a new path because the assigned drive letter does not function any longer.

Important You have to exclude services carefully because wrong entries can corrupt the system state.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
