Symptoms

You install a Server for Network File System (NFS) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008. When the server tries to perform a directory concurrent listing operation on a large folder while the server is processing lots of data, the server may stop responding. Sometimes you receive an error message that resembles the following:

NFS server unresponsive.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a race condition in the way Server for NFS processes the Readdir and ReaddirPlus remote procedure calls (RPC) .

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, you must install the NFS role on the computer.
