Understand formulas with Copilot in Excel

Formulas are a powerful tool in Excel, but they can sometimes be complex and difficult to interpret—especially in large or inherited workbooks. Copilot in Excel can help you understand formulas by providing clear and concise explanations of what they do and how. 
Note: If you don’t see Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, it might not be included with your Microsoft 365 subscription or available based on your organization’s settings. Learn which Copilot license you have.
Get the explanation for a formula

Open Excel.

Select a cell with a formula.

Choose the Copilot sparkle icon that appears next to the cell.

Choose Explain this formula from the dropdown menu.

Review the explanation that Copilot generates.
You can also use Copilot to create a formulas in rows and columns, or create single-cell formulas.
