Symptoms

After you install an ASP.NET update on a computer that is running a Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 two-tier desktop application, or if Internet Information Services (IIS) is hosting the Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch 2011 server, the server may crash. When this problem occurs, users of the application may experience data load failures in the client program.

Cause

This issue occurs because of missing assembly data that is required for the .NET Framework’s Assembly Unification feature to work correctly. Therefore, the application domains load two versions of the same assembly.

Note This issue can occur only during the time between installing an ASP.NET update and the next restart of the application or server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of following methods that is appropriate to the application.

Method 1

For a two-tier desktop application, close and restart the application.

Method 2

For a three-tier website or desktop application, use the administrator account to restart the server that is running IIS.

Method 3

If the application is being started by using Microsoft Visual Studio, restart Visual Studio.
