Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You configure a Post Office Protocol (POP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) account in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and do not select the Remember password option.

  • You click Send/Receive in Outlook 2003 to connect to the POP server.

  • When the Enter Network Password dialog box occurs, type your user name and password and do not select the Save this password in your password list option.

In this scenario, you cannot log on to the POP server. Additionally, the Enter Network Password dialog box appears repeatedly.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Inetcomm.dll component in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 always returns an error when you do not select the Remember password option.
