Symptoms

Assume that you have a .zip compressed file that has an Office file in a SharePoint Server 2010 document library. The name of the Office file contains special characters such as a Japanese character. However, when you use the Japanese character to search for the Office file in the .zip compressed file in the document library, you cannot find the file.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following update:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\

  3. In the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.

  4. Type SkipNameValidation, and then press ENTER.

  5. In the Details pane, right-click SkipNameValidation, and then click Modify.

  6. In the Value data box, type a nonzero value, and then click OK.

  7. Exit Registry Editor.

NoteĀ In order to search for Office files in a .zip compressed file that were uploaded and indexed before you install the hotfix package, you have to perform a full search after you install the hotfix package and set the above registry key.
