This article describes an issue that occurs when data deduplication is enabled in Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Assume that you have a data deduplication-enabled volume that contains a chunk store in Windows Server 2012. You back up some optimized files by using the Data Deduplication feature in Windows Server 2012. When you try to restore an optimized file, this issue occurs.Note This issue also occurs in Windows Server 2012 R2 in which the volumes have the data deduplication feature enabled. This Windows Server 2012 R2 is upgraded from Windows Server 2012.

Cause

This issue occurs because certain optimized files are backed up incorrectly in Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2. Therefore, the deduplication pipeline sets the body size of the chunk store to zero. When you try to selectively restore a file, the body size of the chunk store cannot be determined, and the restore fails.

Windows Server 2012 R2 file information and notes

Important Windows 8.1 hotfixes and Windows Server 2012 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
