Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You migrate from Microsoft SQL Server 2012 to Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017 or 2019.

  • You try to restore SQL Server 2012 databases on SQL Server 2016, 2017 or 2019.

In this scenario, you may receive an error message because of Nonclustered Columnstore Index (NCCI) in the SQL Server 2012 database. Additionally, a dump file is generated.

Converting database 'Database Name' from version VersionNumber to the current version VersionNumber.

Database 'DatabaseName' running the upgrade step from version VersionNumber to version VersionNumber. ​

Msg 211, Sev 23, State 109, Line LineNumber: Corruption in database ID ID, object ID ID possibly due to schema or catalog inconsistency. Run DBCC CHECKCATALOG. [SQLSTATE 22007]​ Msg 3013, Sev 23, State 1, Line LineNumber: RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000]

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
