Supporting publishers and creators

You can support your favorite publisher or creator by sending them a Cheer  Star icon for supporting publishers through Microsoft Start, using money or your Microsoft Rewards points.

How to use Cheers to support a news source

When you send a Cheer Star icon for supporting publishers, you're purchasing a Cheer Star icon for supporting publishers from Microsoft and sending it to support and reward the content creator.

You can purchase and send a Cheer Star icon for supporting publishers using either Microsoft Rewards points or with cash (via a credit card payment).

To support a publisher or creator:

  1. Go to Microsoft Start and sign in with your Microsoft Account. If you don't have one, click here.

  2. Read articles by your favorite publisher or creator.

  3. Click or tap the Cheers star  Star icon for supporting publishers at the top of the article.

You can choose to purchase and send a Cheer  Star icon for supporting publishers to a content creator using Microsoft Rewards points or cash (via a credit card). 

  • Cheers can be purchased with Rewards points at 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 points.

  • Cheers can be purchased with money in your Microsoft Account at 1 USD, 2 USD, 3 USD, 4 USD or 5 USD.

It’s easy to rack up Microsoft Rewards points and earn your way toward great rewards like gift cards, movies, games, non-profit donations, and more.

Cheers do not have a cash value, but each time you send a Cheer  Star icon for supporting publishers, we will show you the minimum value a content creator will receive as a result of your Cheer  Star icon for supporting publishers. Microsoft does not charge you or content creators for sending or receiving Cheers  Star icon for supporting publishers.

You can find your publisher and creator support history in your Microsoft Start account page.

  1. Go to Microsoft Start and sign in with your Microsoft Account.

  2. Open the Navigation menu 

  3. Select Profile then Payments.

  4. Select  Star icon for supporting publishers Support history.

No. Your personal information is not shared, but a publisher can see your user profile name and the amount of the support provided. This is similar to when you comment on an article.

No, all purchases of Cheers  Star icon for supporting publishers are final, and we do not support refunds at this time.

Support a news source by using a subscription

Some publishers provide an option to subscribe to their articles.

  1. Go to Microsoft Start and sign in with your Microsoft Account.

  2. Open the Navigation menu 

  3. Select Profile then Payments.

  4. Choose your active subscription and select Manage then Cancel.

The subscription will renew automatically.

For expired subscriptions, you can re-subscribe from the publisher's profile page, the publisher's article page, or the payments tab of your profile:

  1. Go to Microsoft Start and sign in with your Microsoft Account.

  2. Open the Navigation menu 

  3. Select Profile then Payments.

  4. Choose your active subscription, where you can see the renewal dates.

No, we're not offering this at this time.

If you don't have a backup payment method, the subscription will not renew.

If you do have a backup payment method, your remaining Rewards points balance will get redeemed, and your cash payment will be partially discounted based on your Rewards points balance.
