When you try to open a Microsoft Word document from a network share with Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, you may receive this error:
Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters.
This can happen if you have multiple volumes mounted with the same name. If there are multiple volums with the same name, the wrong volume may be returned by Mac OS X, and can fail to open the file.
To resolve this problem, avoid mounting volumes with the same name. Shares on servers may need to be renamed.
Microsoft Office for Mac uses HFS colon separated file paths. When Office applications, such as Word for Mac 2011, attempt to open a file, the HFS APIs are used. These APIs may not distinguish between volume names and may fail to allow Microsoft Office for Mac to open a file.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
