In Microsoft Outlook, inline images within an e-mail message may display as a Red X rather than the intended image.
Cause
The cause varies depending on the Outlook version.
Microsoft Outlook 2016 and 2013:
The behavior occurs if the image is not embedded in the message, and the following registry value is NOT set, or is absent:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
DWORD: Send Pictures With Document
Value: 1
Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010:
The behavior occurs if the image is not embedded in the message, and the following registry value is set:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
DWORD: Send Pictures With Document
Value: 0
NoteThe x.0 placeholder represents your version of Office (16.0 = Office 2016, 15.0 = Office 2013, 14.0 = Office 2010).
Resolution
The steps to address the behavior vary depending on the Microsoft Outlook version.
Microsoft Outlook 2016 and 2013:
Add Send Pictures With Document with a value of 1, or change the existing Send Pictures With Document value to 1.
Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010:
Remove the Send Pictures With Document registry value, or change the value of Send Pictures With Document to 1.
More Information
In Microsoft Outlook 2016 and 2013, the default value in the absence of Send Pictures With Document is 0, and non-embedded inline images may display the Red X.
In Microsoft Outlook 2007 and 2010, the default value in the absence of Send Pictures With Document is 1, and non-embedded inline images will display as intended.
