Access 2013 stops responding on open of SharePoint Online linked table

Symptoms

In a Microsoft Access 2013 desktop database, if a user attempts to open a linked table to a SharePoint Online list but the Microsoft online credentials for that user are not stored on the computer, Access hangs or stops responding.

Cause

The problem occurs when the user who is attempting to open the existing linked table in Access 2013 doesn't have locally stored Microsoft online credentials for the SharePoint Online site which contains the list. A stored credential may be either a credential in Windows Credential Manager or a persistent cookie in Internet Explorer.

This is a known problem in Microsoft Access 2013.

Resolution

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Refresh List

  1. Open Windows Task Manager, select Microsoft Access and click End task
  2. Reopen the database.
  3. Right-click on the linked table in Access, choose More Options -> Refresh List
  4. Log in with your credentials
Method 2: Programmatically Relink List

  1. Open Windows Task Manager, select Microsoft Access and click End task
  2. Reopen the database and create a new module
  3. In VBA code, use the RefreshLink method of the TableDefs collection for the linked tables
