TFS ServerTrace Diagnostic Collector

Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2010 Diagnostic Collector includes the TFS ServerTrace tracing tool. This tool collects diagnostic information such as trace logs when an issue is reproduced or stopped. This trace lets you record real-time information about application execution and performance. This information is useful for troubleshooting issues that occur on the TFS server.

This collector supports TFS 2010 and later versions of TFS.

How to enable the TFS Job Agent tracing tool

TFS ServerTrace Diagnostic Collector follows these steps to change the Web.config file:
  1. The collector creates a backup of Web.config to %temp% under the TFSServer folder. Web.config is located inthe following folder:
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 1x.0\Application Tier\Web Service

Note%temp% is the name of the folder that contains the profile of the user who is running the diagnostics tool.
  2. The collector adds the TFS Server tracing tool in the Web.config file.
  3. As soon as tracing is turned on, you can reproduce an issue to collect information about it.
  4. After you reproduce the issue and then stop tracing, the collector restores the Web.config to its original state (from the backup in step 1).
