"Add a domain" tab is missing from the Office 365 admin center

PROBLEM

In the Office 365 portal, you notice that the Add a domain tab is missing from the domains page of the Office 365 admin center. Therefore, you can't add a domain to your Office 365 account.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you don't have a subscription or licenses associated with your Office 365 account. To verify that this is the issue that you're experiencing, click licensing in the Office 365 admin center, and then do the following:
  • When you click subscriptions, you receive the following message:
    You do not have any subscriptions. To try or buy a subscription, go to the Purchase page.
  • When you click licenses, you receive the following message:
    You currently have no licenses. You can purchase a subscription or contact Support to renew existing subscriptions.

SOLUTION

In the Office 365 admin center, click licensing, click subscriptions, click Purchase, and then select Trial or Buy now for the plan that you want.
