Can't save changes to Excel for Mac files on network storage

When you try to save changes to an Excel workbook that's located on network storage in Microsoft Excel 2016 for Mac, you experience one or more of the following problems:
  • You're prompted with a "grant permissions" dialog box.
  • You receive an error message that indicates that a sharing violation has occurred.
  • You receive an error message stating that you don’t have permissions to save changes.
  • The Excel file is unexpectedly deleted.

Excel first writes changes to a temporary file and then swaps the names of the original and temporary files to persist the changes. Some enterprise network storage systems do not perform the file swap in the correct order, and this triggers one or more of the errors that are described in the "Symptoms" section.

To resolve this issue, update to Excel 2016 for Mac 15.28 or later (November 2016 update). This update contains additional fallback logic to detect and correct this issue.
