Description of the security update for Word 2016: May 14, 2019

Applies to: Word 2016

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Word software if the program fails to correctly handle objects in memory. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2019-0953.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Word 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This update contains the following improvements:

  • Adds support for the new Japanese era in the postcard design wizard in the Japanese version of Word 2016.

This update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:

  • After you install 4461543, if a document contains the INCLUDEPICTURE and INCLUDETEXT fields, you receive a warning message when the fields are recalculated. This update adds Group Policy to disable the warning message for the INCLUDEPICTURE and INCLUDETEXT fields.
  • After you install 4032258 or a later update for Word 2016, the table layout displays incorrectly when you type inside a document that has a table.
  • When you use the Quick Print function to print a document in Word 2016, you see incorrect printout results such as overlapping letters and large spaces between letters.
