If you don't need to check the boxes, you can add a simple, square bullet to your list items. For a dynamic check box, follow the steps below.

On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, select
  Check Box Content Control.-
If the Developer tab isn't visible, you can add the Developer tab.

If you prefer a check mark instead of an X, you can change checked boxes to a check mark.

Copy the check box and paste it anywhere else you want to add one.

On the Developer tab, select Check Box.

Double-click the check box to set the Check Box Form Field Options.Â

Adding a checklist isn't possible in Word for the web. You can, however, add a checklist in the Word desktop app.Â

To open it, at the top of the ribbon, select Editing > Open in Desktop App.
