On the Insert tab, selectÂ
 Symbols and choose  Symbol. -
To add a special character like a copyright mark or em dash, select the Special Characters tab.
To insert Greek symbols, currency symbols, and so on, select the Symbols tab. Select a category from the Subset list to focus in on the type of symbol you want to find.Â

Select Insert.

Select a blank cell, go to Insert, selectÂ
 Symbols and then  Symbol. -
If not expanded, select the
 Expand button on the right corner of the gallery. -
Choose a category from the list on the left, choose and double-click a symbol to use.

Close the gallery.
Inserting a symbol character isn't currently possible in Excel for the web. You can, however, insert a symbol character in the Excel desktop app.

To open the desktop app, at the top of the ribbon, select Editing > Open in Desktop App.
