In Excel, you can open multiple workbooks at the same time. You can also create additional windows for the current workbook by using View > New Window. You can close an individual workbook window, close a workbook, or exit Excel. Exiting Excel closes all open workbooks. For more information, see Compare two or more worksheets at the same time.
Close the active workbook window
- Select the workbook window that you want to close.
- Select the
in the upper-right corner of the workbook window.
Note
If the window is the only open window of the workbook, the whole workbook closes. If there are more workbook windows of the same workbook, only the active workbook window closes.
Close a workbook
- Activate the workbook that you want to close.
- On the File tab, select Close.
Close all workbooks and exit Excel
Do one of the following:
- In the upper-right corner of the Excel window, select Close.
- On the File tab, select Exit.
