You can import term sets into the SharePoint Term Store Management Tool instead of manually creating term sets from scratch. This can save you time, especially if you have many terms. For more information creating term sets manually, see Create, configure, and manage groups and term sets.

Open the Term Store Management Tool

To open the Term Store management tool, select the SharePoint environment that you use, and then follow the steps.

  1. In SharePoint in Microsoft 365, click Settings SharePoint 2016 Settings button on title bar., and then click Site settings.

  2. Under Site Administration, select Term store management.

  3. In the Term Store management tool, click View a sample import file to download a copy of the import file.

  4. Use the sample file as a template for creating an import file.

    You can import a term set using the template or other UTF-8 CSV (comma-separated values) formatted file.

  5. Import the file into the desired group to create a new term set.
