If you’ve used OneNote for Windows 2016 to create notebooks on your local hard drive, you won’t be able to use these notebooks with any other versions of OneNote (such as OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote for the web, or the OneNote mobile apps) unless you move them to your free, cloud-based OneDrive account.
Keeping your notebooks on OneDrive provides several benefits:

You have private access to your notes from anywhere in the world

You can read and edit your notes from virtually any computer or mobile device

You can share notes with people you select and work together even if you’re in different places

To migrate your local notebooks to the cloud, do the following:

In OneNote for Windows 10, click the Navigation button. (Skip this step if the navigation pane is already visible.)

Next to the name of your current notebook, click the Notebooks dropdown arrow, and then click More Notebooks at the bottom of the list.

In the Choose notebooks to open window that opens, select the check boxes next to the names of the locally stored notebooks that you want to open.
Note: Locally stored notebooks are denoted with the text (On this computer).

Click Open.

In the Upload to the cloud window that opens, click the Select cloud account dropdown arrows to select the cloud account (such as OneDrive or OneDrive for Business) that you want to use for each listed notebook.
Note: If you don’t see the account you want, click + Add account to add it.

Click Upload.
Your uploaded notebooks are now available online and can be accessed and edited from any version of OneNote on any device.
