Excel has displayed the following information on the Message Bar:

"Some PivotTable features aren't compatible with this version of Excel."

As a result, you can still view the PivotTable data, but you can’t change it or interact with it, such as modifying the field values, sorting or filtering, refreshing the PivotTable data, or revealing the metadata behind linked data types.

If you want to update PivotTables in this workbook, there are several approaches you can take:

  • Open the workbook in Excel for the web, which uses an up-to-date version of Excel. Occasionally, PivotTable features may not be compatible with Excel for the web yet. In this case, you can delete and re-create the PivotTable.

  • Upgrade this legacy version of Excel to Microsoft 365. However, you may still experience issues with Excel for Mac.

  • Request from your Microsoft 365 admin to be added to a more recent Office Update Channel. For more information, see When do I get the newest features for Microsoft 365?
