ISSUE

Users on Monthly Enterprise Channel (MEC) version 2512 using the Office CDN are observing repeated update, download, and apply behavior even though Office remains on the same build (2512). In some cases, Office apps such as Outlook and Excel are found closed unexpectedly after a device lock/unlock cycle, followed by Office showing an update available despite already being on the latest build.

Symptoms:

  • Devices updated to 2512 build 19530.20226, then repeatedly initiated download activity without an expected version/config change

  • Clicking Update triggers download and apply of additional files under: Program Files\Microsoft Office\Updates (Download / Apply folders)

  • After update completes, Office build version remains unchanged.

The sequence of events is as follows:

  1. Office updates to Version 2512 build 19530.20226.

  2. Next time the scheduled task triggers an update check the most recent version is already installed and a corruption check is run on the installed version.

  3. Due to the hash mismatch issue this corruption check will always initiate a full re-download and installation of all installed Office Microsoft 365 products.

  4. Once the reinstall as part of the corruption check completes it will create a cache entry the prevents further corruption checks on this version.

Note: This affects builds 2511 and onwards.

STATUS: RESOLVED

Microsoft identified an issue in the Microsoft 365 Apps update workflow where the integrity verification step could trigger a full content download when updating to Monthly Enterprise Channel version 2512. This could result in excessive download traffic even on devices already updated. Microsoft has addressed the issue via a hotfix; until remediation is applied, temporary mitigations may include pausing an update deployment for 2512 and/or controlling CDN traffic to reduce network impact.   These versions are scheduled to release on March 2026 patch Tuesday.
