By default, Microsoft Lync 2010 communications software keeps track of where you are, as long as you log on from different locations. The location name you specify corresponds to your current network connection. For example, you might be using Lync 2010 on your laptop or mobile phone while traveling, or from a conference room in another building, or you might sign out of Lync at work and then sign in from your home computer.
Depending on how your organization has set up your presence information, your contacts might be able to see your location as part of your presence information, which makes it easy to tell how available you are or what kind of communication might be best at the time. Once you set a particular location name, Lync remembers it, so the next time it detects that you are using that network connection, the location name that is displayed with your presence will change to reflect it.
If you are at a new location and specify a name that you previously used somewhere else, that name will become associated with the current (new) location and network connection.
Location information might be used for routing emergency calls to the appropriate emergency response center by using the transmitted location. The routing service is provided by certified solution providers, and service is available only in the United States.
What do you want to do?
Share your location
Set your location by doing the following.
-
Open Lync, and, in the Lync main window, next to your picture, click the location menu (down arrow), and select Show Others My Location. You can also set this by clicking the Options button, and then select Location in the Personal options.
Hide your location from contacts
If your organization has configured Lync so that location sharing is enabled for your contacts, you can still hide it. Hiding your location from contacts does not hide it from emergency services.
-
In the Lync main window, click the location menu.
-
Clear the Show Others My Location check box. A red circle with a diagonal line through it is displayed.
