On the Insert tab, select Page Numbers.

Select a page number location style.

Check Include Page Count.
Word for Mac doesn't directly support showing the total number of pages, but here is a workaround:

Double-click in the header or footer area to open it.

On the Header & Footer tab, select Field.

Under Categories, select Document Information.

Press tab to Field names, select NumPages. Select Close Header and Footer to exit.
Tip: If you are putting individual page numbers, add of and the field to the right of the page number. This will show in a format of Page 2 of 5.
