Use a screen reader to create and connect a row to Azure Boards project in Roadmap

This article is for people with visual or cognitive impairments who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Microsoft 365 screen reader support content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use Project Online with your keyboard and screen reader to create and connect a row to an Azure Boards project in your roadmap. We have tested it with Narrator, but it might work with other screen readers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Notes:

  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • To learn more about screen readers, go to How screen readers work with Microsoft 365.

  • When you use Project Online, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge as your web browser. Because Project Online runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in the desktop program. For example, you’ll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not Project Online.

Create and connect a row

After you have created a roadmap in Project Home, you can add rows and connect them to Azure Boards projects.

  1. When you open a roadmap from Project Home, you hear "Roadmap name" and its name. Press the Tab key until you hear "Command toolbar, Add row," and press Enter.

  2. Type a name for the row.

  3. Press the Tab key once and type the name or email address of the row owner. To move the focus to the list of search results, press Shift+Tab once, and press the Tab key once. Then press the SR key+Right arrow key to move forward in the list, and press Enter to select a result. You hear "Deselect owner," followed by the name of the selected owner.

Note: You hear each search result twice when moving in the list.

  4. Press the Tab key. You hear: "Connect to a project." Press Enter, and use the Down and Up arrow keys to move between Project Online and Azure Boards. Select Azure Boards and press Enter.

  5. Press Enter to open the Azure DevOps organization list, press the Down arrow key to browse the organizations, and press Enter to make a selection. When your selection has been validated, you hear: "Alert, looks good."

  6. Press the Tab key until you hear: "Select a project name." Press Enter to open the menu, press the Down arrow key to browse the available projects, and press Enter to make a selection.

  7. Press the Tab key until you hear "Connect, button," and press Enter.

  8. You hear: "Search for items to add." Start typing the name of the task you want to connect to. Press the Down arrow key to browse the matching results, and press Enter to make a selection.

  9. Repeat step 8 until you have added all the tasks you want. Then press the Tab key until you hear "Add, button," and press Enter.
