Use a screen reader to edit the mailbox display name in the Exchange admin center

This article is for people with visual or cognitive impairments who use a screen reader program such as Windows Narrator, JAWS, or NVDA with Microsoft 365 products. This article is part of the Microsoft 365 screen reader support content set where you can find more accessibility information on our apps. For general help, visit Microsoft Support.

Use the Exchange admin center (EAC) with your keyboard and a screen reader to edit the display name of a mailbox. The display name is the username part of the mailbox email address. We have tested it with Narrator in Microsoft Edge and with JAWS in Chrome, but it might work with other screen readers and web browsers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.

Notes:

  1. On the EAC dashboard, press the Tab key until you hear: “Left navigation hamburger, expanded.” If you hear "Collapsed" instead of "Expanded," press Spacebar to expand the menu before continuing.

  2. Press the Tab key once. You hear the item currently selected in the left navigation pane. Press the Up or Down arrow key until you hear "Recipients, expanded," and press Spacebar.

  3. Press the Down arrow key until you hear "Mailboxes," and press Enter. The list of available mailboxes opens to the right of the navigation pane.

  4. To find the mailbox you want to edit, do one of the following:

    1. To search for the mailbox, press the Tab key until you hear "Add a shared mailbox," press the Right arrow key until you hear "Search mailboxes," type your search words, and then press Enter. Press the Tab key until you hear "Select grid row," followed by the details of the mailbox in focus. Press the Up or Down arrow key until you hear the name of the mailbox you want.

    2. To browse the list of all mailboxes, press the Tab key until you hear "Select grid row," followed by the details of the mailbox in focus. Press the Up or Down arrow key until you hear the name of the mailbox you want.

  5. When the focus is on the correct mailbox, press Shift+Tab until you hear "Delete," press the Right arrow key until you hear "More options," and press Enter.

  6. Press the Down arrow key until you hear "Edit email address," and press Enter. The Edit user's email address pane opens.

  7. Press the Tab key until you hear "Edit," followed by the current username part of the email address. Type the new username part.

  8. When you're ready, press the Tab key until you hear "Save," and press Enter. When the change has been saved, you hear: "Close button." To close the mailbox details pane and return to the list of mailboxes, press Enter.
