Select the File tab and select Options.

Select the Advanced tab.

Under Editing options, select the Use the insert key to control overtype mode and Use overtype mode check boxes.

Select OK.

On the Word menu, select Preferences.

Select Edit and under Editing Options.

Select the Replace existing text as you type (Overtype mode) check box.

Close Preferences.
Toggling overtype mode isn't currently possible in Word for the web. You can, however, turn overtype mode on or off in the Word desktop app.

To open the desktop app, at the top of the ribbon, select Editing > Open in Desktop.
