What are Announcement Group chats and how do I use them in GroupMe?

Announcement Group chats are a great way to communicate information to a large group without it getting too noisy. In Announcement Groups, only the owner and admins are able to post to the chat. Members are able to like messages that are sent.

How to create a new Announcement Group:

  1. In the Chats tab, tap New conversation  New chat button.

  2. Tap Start Announcement Group.

  3. You can Set an Avatar (profile picture), Name your new group, Give your group a topic, then select Next.

  4. On the Advanced Settings screen, you’ll have the following options:

    Tip: You can choose to Skip if you don't want to select any advanced settings.

    • Request to join – An approval will be needed from the owner or admin to let new users join.

    • Ask join question (requires Request to join) – When a user requests to join, they will be asked the question.

    • Customize group – Select a theme for your Announcement Group.

    • Emoji like – Select the emoji that members can react to messages with.

  5. Once you’ve selected your Advanced settings, Tap Next.

  6. To add members, tap Share from the Share your group! banner, then select which method you would like to share the join link with others.

How to promote another member to an Admin:

  1. In the Announcement Group chat, tap the Group Avatar (profile picture).

  2. Tap Members.

  3. Select the member you want to promote, then tap Make Admin.

  4. After the member has been promoted, they will be able to send messages to the Announcement Group chat.

Note: If you’re unable to post after being promoted to Admin, you’ll need to go back to your chat list and then back into the Announcement Group chat.

How to create a new Announcement Group:

  1. In the Chats tab, select New conversation  New chat button.

  2. Select Start Announcement Group.

  3. You can Add Group Photo, Name your new group, Add a Topic, then select the arrow  Start group Next arrow button.

  4. On the Chat Settings window, you’ll have the following options:

    Tip: You can skip these options by closing the window if you don't want to select any advanced settings.

    • Enable Group Sharing - Select Share link or Show QR Code to share the Announcement Group chat with others.

    • Require Approval – An approval will be needed from the owner or admin to let new users join.

    • Show Join Question (requires Require Approval) – When a user requests to join, they will be asked the question.

    • Like Icon – Select Change to update the emoji that members can react to messages with.

  5. Once you’ve selected your Settings, close the window to go to your Announcement Group chat.

How to promote another member to an Admin:

  1. In the Announcement Group chat, select the group avatar(profile picture) to Open chat details.

  2. Select Members.

  3. Select the member you want to promote, then select Make Admin.

  4. After the member has been promoted, they will be able to send messages to the Announcement Group chat.

Note: If you’re unable to post after being promoted to Admin, you’ll need to go back to your chat list and back into the Announcement Group chat.

How to create a new Announcement Group:

  1. In the Chats tab, select Start a new chat  New chat button.

  2. Select Start Announcement Group.

  3. You can SetGroup Avatar (profile picture), Enter Group Name, Enter Group Topic, then select Create Group.

  4. On the Settings for "Group Name" window, you’ll have the following options:

    Tip: You can skip these options by closing the window if you don't want to select any advanced settings.

    • Enable Group Sharing - Copy the share link or the QR code to share the Announcement Group chat with others.

    • Request to join – An approval will be needed from the owner or admin to let new users join. Select Yes to confirm.

    • Ask join question (requires Request to join) – When a user requests to join, they will be asked the question.

    • Like Icon – Select Change to update the emoji that members can react to messages with.

    • Change Theme – Select a theme for your Announcement Group.

  5. Once you’ve selected your Settings, close the window to go to your Announcement Group chat.

How to promote another member to an Admin:

  1. In the Announcement Group chat, select the Group Avatar (profile picture).

  2. Select Members.

  3. Hover over the member you want to promote, then select Make Admin.

  4. After the member has been promoted, they will be able to send messages to the Announcement Group chat.

Note: If you’re unable to post after being promoted to Admin, you’ll need to go back to your chat list and back into the Announcement Group chat.
