Not sure if this is the right fix? We've added this issue to our memory dump diagnostic which can confirm.

Symptoms

Assume that you install Symantec Endpoint Protection or Forefront TMG on a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer that has the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 979612 or any later version of the hotfix that contains the update of the Tcpip.sys file installed. For example, assume that you install the hotfix that is described in Microsoft KB article 2553549 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. In these situations, the computer crashes randomly. Additionally, you receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

STOP: 0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)

Notes

  • This Stop error describes a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL issue.

  • The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.

  • Not all "Stop 0x000000D1" errors are caused by this issue.

  • The version of the Tcpip.sys file in KB 979612 is 6.0.6002.22320 (LDR Branch / V1 Package). The version of the Tcpip.sys file in KB 2553549 is 6.0.6002.22643. Therefore, the KB 2553549 contains this issue.

  • The specific hotfixes that contain the later update of the Tcpip.sys file are listed in the "More Information" section.

Cause

This issue occurs because Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) changes the datagram that is sent from network layer unexpectedly. When network layer sends datagram to TCP, TCP returns the datagram with the same network layer header size value. After Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) processes or inspects the value of network layer header size, TCP changes the value. However, in some code paths, TCP does not revert the value of network layer header size. Therefore, the agreement between network layer and TCP is broken.

Resolution

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
