Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You're using a cluster that's running Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2.
-
You perform a backup or run the vssadmin list writers command on one of the cluster nodes.
Note For more information about this command, see vssadmin list writers.
In this scenario, the backup or list writer operation may log the following error in the Application log on all cluster nodes other than the node that you ran the command on:

Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
Cause
This problem occurs because of a permissions issue between the cluster service and the System Writer. The Cluster service on the backup node acts as a requester and queries information on the non-backup nodes. The Cluster service fails this query with an "Access Denied" error because System Writer runs as a network service that is not permitted by the cluster services COM permissions.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix on Windows Server 2012, there are no prerequisites for installing this hotfix.
To apply this hotfix on Windows Server 2012 R2, you must first have update 2919355 installed.
Restart requirement
You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix does not replace any previously released hotfix.
