Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have two distribution groups in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment. For example, you have distribution group A and distribution group B.

  • Distribution group B is a member of distribution group A.

  • You configure a journal rule to journal messages for distribution group A.

  • You grant a distribution group B user Send As permission.

  • The user sets the From Address to distribution group B, and then sends an email message.

In this scenario, the journal report for this email message is not sent to the journaling mailbox as expected.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Exchange server journaling agent only checks individual recipients that are members of the distribution group. However, the Exchange server journaling agent does not check the distribution group if it is a member of a distribution group.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2645995 Description of Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2
