Applies ToWindows 7 Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You try to create a snapshot set. The VSS writers report the components of the snapshot set.

  • The snapshot set has no disk volumes.Note A snapshot set that has no disk volumes indicates that you did not call the IVssBackupComponents::AddToSnapshotSet method.

In this scenario, the VSS writer cannot create the snapshot. For example, you use software to back up Microsoft Office SharePoint components on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. In this scenario, the software returns an error. Additionally, the following vssadmin list writers command output indicates that the SharePoint writer fails in the following state:

Note The vssadmin list writers command lists the subscribed VSS writers.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the VSS framework that is used on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. This error causes the VSS writer to perform an incorrect write state check after the snapshot is created. This behavior causes the snapshot creation to fail.
