Get to know Power Query

Set up your header row

Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9.

Let’s apply transformations. The first one makes sure the column headers are friendly. For example, "product name" is a much nicer than "txt_ProdNam".

  1. In the query pane, select Edit to open the Power Query editor.

  2. To confirm that Power Query recognized your headers in the top row, select Home > Transform, and then select Use first row as headers.

Power Query converts the first row of data to a header row. To return to the original headers, you can delete that step.

  3. To rename the columns, double-click each column header and type the name you want or edit an existing one.

  4. To return the transformed data to the Excel worksheet, select Home > Close & Load.
