Symptoms
Consider the following scenario. On a Windows Server 2008-based computer or on a Windows Vista-based computer, you use an application that has the backup permission enabled. The application also uses the BackupRead API function to read stream data from an encrypted file. In this scenario, the application cannot read the stream data from the encrypted file. Additionally, the GetLastError API function returns the ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED error value.
Cause
This problem occurs because the FSCTL_TXFS_READ_BACKUP_INFORMATION control code requires explicit read access to the encrypted file. However, the backup permission does not grant it. Therefore, the FSCTL_TXFS_READ_BACKUP_INFORMATION control code returns the STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED error value, and the BackupRead API function fails.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
