Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Microsoft Visual Studio Team System Web Access 2010 to connect to a Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS 2010) server.

  • You use the MSF for CMMI Process Improvement process template to create a team project.

  • You create a work item that is based on a customized work item type, and then you click Save or Save & Close to save the work item.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message:

The value for field 'field' must be the same as the original value.

Additionally, the value in the ID field of the newly created work item is 0.

Cause

This issue occurs because the customized field values of the created work item are overwritten by the default field values. This behavior conflicts with work item rules, and that causes the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
