Malgun Gothic (맑은 고딕 in Korean) is a typeface designed for typesetting the Korean language in the Hangul script. It is intended for short passages of text onscreen, where it is especially legible at small sizes on lower-resolution displays.
Its style is simple, with open character shapes, upright strokes, and very little contrast between thick and thin strokes. In its overall “sans serif” appearance, it is meant to complement the simplicity of Segoe UI. The Semilight weight is intended for somewhat larger sizes, such as subheads and labels.
Malgun Gothic has three weights, Regular, Bold, and Semilight, with no italic styles. The Regular and Bold weights were originally designed by the Sandoll type foundry, based on the typeface Hunminjeongeum; the Semilight weight was added later, designed by the GoodFont type foundry.
Malgun Gothic was designed to take advantage of ClearType technology for improved onscreen legibility.
