How to speed up or slow down a video

Is your video clip or audio file too fast or too slow? Have more control over the speeding up and slowing down of clips with Clipchamp.

You can adjust the speed of a clip or audio file in a range of 0.1x to 16x in just a few clicks. The article below walks you through the steps or you can also watch our video tutorial instead.

Note: The screenshots in this article are from Clipchamp's personal version. The same principles apply to Clipchamp for work accounts where this feature is also available.

How to change the speed of a video and audio track

Add media assets onto the editing timeline

Drag and drop your media assets from the media tab to the timeline. Make sure to place your video above your audio file.

Then, select the item you'd like to edit on the timeline so it's highlighted. Editing options will appear on the right-hand side of the user interface.

Move the slider in the Speed menu on the right

Select the Speed menu option, which will reveal a slider.

Drag the slider left and right to adjust the clip speed. Choose from 0.1x to up to 16x speed options. Moving the slider left and right will also edit the length of the asset on your timeline.

Alternatively, you can input a numeric value to manually adjust your video’s speed to a more specific value.

These instructions are the same for both audio and video files. Make sure to click on the media file you would like to edit on the timeline first.

If your video asset has audio included in the video, i.e. the audio is not visible as a separate track on the timeline, any speed changes you make will get applied to the video and its built-in audio track. If your audio file is separate from your video like in the example above, you can edit each media asset separately.

Undoing a speed change

You can return the video to its original state at any time by clicking on the clip in the timeline and resetting it back to its original speed of 1x using the slider. You can also use the undo and redo buttons to revert or reapply changes. Alternatively, drag and drop the original video onto your timeline again from the media library.
