Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2) fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You implement a SQL Server Analysis Services personalization extension in Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services (SSAS 2012) or in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2).

  • You run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query against an instance of SSAS in one session. This operation triggers the execution of the personalization extension.

  • Before the personalization extension is finished executing the query, you try to cancel it.

In this scenario, a session deadlock occurs and Analysis Services is unresponsive. Note When this issue occurs, operations that require a commit lock on the database involved in the cancelled query encounter blocking, and all subsequent operations on the involved database are blocked.

Cause

The issue occurs because of a deadlock that occurs between the query thread that is running the personalization extension code and the thread that sends the cancel request.
